The Awami League said the nation “expected an apology” from BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia during her press conference, in light of the events that her party had recently engaged in across the country.
“They set fire to vehicles and burnt people and even declared a war against environment. We thought Khaleda Zia would apologise for such activities, but she did not,” said AL Publicity and Publications Secretary Hasan Mahmud.
“Instead, she defended these activities and accused others,” he said at a press conference at the party’s Dhanmondi office yesterday evening.
Regarding the BNP chief’s demand for a political dialogue, Hasan said they would take such initiatives if the BNP stopped violence and cut ties with Jamaat-e-Islami.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia had addressed the media at the Westin Hotel in the capital earlier in the evening.
Hasan accused the BNP and its allies of attacking minority communities before and after the January 5 poll, claiming that those who had been arrested for attacking the minority communities were BNP and Jamaat activists.
Awami League central leaders Abdul Mannan Khan, Abdus Sobhan Golap, Afzal Hossain and Mrinal Kanti Das were among those present at the press briefing.
