Update : 19 Nov 2013, 08:54 AM

The Election Commission has decided to propose three possible dates to President Abdul Hamid for holding the next parliamentary polls and seek his advice on announcing the polls schedule.

The commission will also request the president to deploy armed forces to maintain law and order.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad, election commissioners Mohammad Abu Hafiz, Abdul Mobarak and Md Shah Newaz and EC Secretary Muhammed Sadique would meet the president at 4pm on Tuesday. Election Commissioner Zabed Ali will not be on the team as he is abroad.

Commissioner Mohammad Abu Hafiz said the EC would inform the president of their overall preparation for the elections. They would also discuss the law and order situation and request the president to deploy army after the announcement of the polls schedule.

On announcing the schedule, he said the full commission would make the final decision on the matter as per the advice of president.

An official told the Dhaka Tribune, seeking anonymity, that the commission had prepared a file on its overall preparations, including the proposal of three possible election dates, to present to the president at the meeting.

The EC would also present the circulars of army deployment in the past four parliamentary polls and a report on the general election held on February 15, 1996.

EC officials said the commissioners would examine the situation and statistics of previous elections, mainly the dates of elections and announcement of polls schedule, and also information on deployment of army.

The commission will inform the president of the possible polling centres and 10 cases regarding the delimitation of parliamentary constituencies.

According to the constitution, the next parliamentary elections must be held within January 24.
