The activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League who were deprived of posts in the newly-announced Chittagong city unit committee went on the rampage through the city on Wednesday.
They torched at least four motorbikes and vandalised 25 vehicles in the city’s GEC and Wasa intersections in the evening, said eyewitnesses and police.
They also damaged different installations beside the city roads and blasted five crude bombs at different points. They blocked the city’s Badamtoli intersection too, said locals.
The activists mostly from the city’s Omar Gani-MES College brought out a procession from the city’s number two gate area around 7:30pm and rampaged through the city, police added.
Azizul Haque, inspector (investigation) of Panchlaish police station, told the Dhaka Tribune that the BCL men attempted to block roads by torching tyres.
Sowmen Das and Yusuf Khan, activists of Omar Gani-MES College unit BCL, said the new committee was formed consisting of extortionists, nonstudents and terrorists and so they were protesting the new committee.
BCL central committee on Wednesday announced a 24-member committee of the Chittagong city unit nominating Imran Uddin Himuas president and NurulAzamRoni general secretary after 10 years.
Nazmul Alam Siddique, general secretary of BCL central committee, said: “We will form a full-fledged committee of 121 members gradually.”
