National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam on Thursday said President Mohammed Shahabuddin, should be arrested instead of only being asked to resign.
He made the remarks while addressing the party's July march and roadside rally in Jamalpur Sadar upazila as the chief guest.
Speaking at the rally, Nahid said: “Now, after all this time, there is a desire for the president to resign. In five months, BNP could not replace the Awami League's president. A government that could not replace the Awami League's president, how will it change the state? Resignation alone is not enough; he must be arrested. A qualified, neutral and guardian-like person must be elected president. BNP does not want to make a qualified and popular person the president.”
The NCP organized the march and rally to press its 5-point demand, including implementing the referendum mandate and ensuring border security.
Nahid said: “We wanted change through the mass uprising. There has been no change in the country. Drug trafficking has not stopped. Extortion has not stopped. Prisonization has not stopped. Land grabbing has not stopped.”
NCP Northern Region Chief Organizer Sarjis Alam, Joint Member Secretary Lutfor Rahman, National Student Power President Zahid Ahsan, and other central and local leaders also addressed the rally.
