Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and opposition chief whip, said on Friday that women’s oppression and rape have increased across Bangladesh since the formation of the BNP government.

He made the remarks while delivering the keynote speech as the chief guest at the NCP’s Dhaka organizational division iftar and prayer gathering at Friends Club ground in Uttara, Dhaka.

“A woman was raped in Hatiya, Noakhali, for voting for Shapla Kali. Women’s oppression and child rape continue nationwide. Despite all this, civil society and women’s rights activists remain silent,” Nahid said.

He added: “Even if everyone remains silent, the National Citizen Party will not. NCP will always speak out to protect people’s rights.”

Regarding the president, the opposition chief whip said: “The current president used to end his speeches by saying ‘Joy Bangla’; now he ends his speeches with ‘Zindabad’. The whole country is running this way. Instead of ‘Joy Bangla’, it has become ‘Bangladesh Zindabad’. One party has replaced another, but there has been no change in people’s fate.”

Nasiruddin Patwary, chief coordinator of the NCP, and spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, along with central and Dhaka divisional leaders, attended the iftar as special guests.
