Former adviser of interim government Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain has formally joined the National Citizen Party (NCP) but will not contest the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election.
He has also been given the responsibility of serving as chief of the party’s election management committee.
The announcement was made at 6:30 pm on Monday during a press conference at the party’s temporary central office in Banglamotor, Dhaka, where NCP Convener Nahid Islam stated that Asif Mahmud has been appointed the party’s spokesperson.
"Today, Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain officially joined the National Citizen Party (NCP)," announced Nahid.
Nahid further announced that Asif Mahmud will not be 'contesting the election himself'.
"Instead, he will work to secure the victory of the party’s nominated candidates in the upcoming polls so that they can enter parliament and represent the aspirations of the people’s mass uprising," he said.
According to Nahid, for this reason, Asif has been appointed as the chief of National Citizen Party's Election Management Committee.
Asif Mahmud said: "I believe that rather than just me going to parliament alone, if I can contribute to getting many more of our July uprising comrades into parliament—if I can properly fulfill my responsibilities—there could be no greater success than that."
Regarding "Gonovote" Asif Mahmud said: "If you vote 'yes' in the referendum and elect them, I believe these reforms will propel Bangladesh forward by 100 years."
Nasiruddin Patwary, chief coordinator of the party, announced that across Bangladesh, the National Citizen Party has fielded 47 candidates. "All 47 are capable, qualified individuals who are accepted by the people," he added.
However, the party did not disclose the list of these 47 candidates yet.
