Shakil Uzzaman, senior member and office secretary of the Gono Odhikar Parishad, has said the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election should be held in January or February, as the government’s announced time, the first half of April, is during natural disasters, summer heat, and public examination periods, which are unsuitable for a national election environment.
He made these remarks on Tuesday afternoon while distributing leaflets of the Gono Odhikar Parishad’s 21-point manifesto at the bus stand area of Bhuapur municipal town in Tangail.
Shakil said that the main leader of the 2018 quota reform movement, Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, and they, as opposition party leaders and activists, were subjected to torture, killings, oppression, and imprisonment for speaking out against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina at that time.
"Today, that tyrant has fled the country. Although Hasina has fled, her allies remain in the country engaging in various conspiracies," he said.
Shakil also said that although several months have passed since the fall of Hasina, mob violence has not ceased in the country.
"Extortion and occupation at autorickshaw, bus, and truck stands have increased. In response, law enforcement needs to increase vigilance. Several false cases have already been filed against journalists in Bhuapur.
"Additionally, with the rainy season approaching, I appeal to the administration to stop illegal sand extraction from cultivated lands."
