BNP Vice Chairman Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon has strongly dismissed a claim that the people want to see the current government in power for a full five-year term, calling such statements “completely false.”

Speaking as chief guest at a rally organized by the Louhajang upazila BNP and its affiliated organizations on Friday evening, Ripon said: “Some government advisers are under the illusion that people want them to remain in power for five years. This is false; the people want a government that is accountable. They want to vote and establish a government through democratic elections.”

The rally, held at the grounds of Louhajang Government College in Munshiganj, was organized to push forward the public demand for change in the state and political structure as part of BNP’s 24-point mass uprising agenda.

Ripon emphasized that the current administration should remember its status as an interim government.

“An interim government is not meant to design five-year development plans. Constructing international airports or transforming Bangladesh into another Singapore is beyond their scope. Their responsibility is to initiate the groundwork so that future governments—formed through public mandate—can carry out these visions. The priority should be ensuring a drug-free society and a safe, smooth environment for our youth,” he said.

“We want real change in Bangladesh. We want governance by the people. We do not want a system where someone behaves like a Mughal emperor or a feudal landlord after getting elected. A landlord may be elected for five years, but that does not make him a ruler for life. We reject that model of governance,” he added.
