BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the BNP was the first to propose state reforms, announcing a 31-point outline two years ago when no one else was discussing such changes.
Speaking at a pre-iftar event organized by the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) at the National Press Club on Sunday, Fakhrul said there is no major difference between the BNP’s earlier reform proposals and the ones being discussed today.
He reiterated the BNP’s demand for swift elections to transfer power to an elected government, saying: “We have achieved a new independence by defeating the fascist Hasina government. Now, we must strengthen our unity further.”
Fakhrul accused deposed prime minister Hasina’s government of systematically destroying state institutions and democracy, leaving nothing intact.
He stressed that rebuilding the nation from this state of devastation would not be easy. “The responsibility of rebuilding the country does not rest solely on the government. All political parties must work together to lift the nation,” he added.
Expressing concern over rising crime rates, Fakhrul said: “Every day, we see distressing news of rapes and murders, which are tormenting the people.”
He also pointed out that young people, especially students, are becoming increasingly intolerant, as seen in the frequent protests and demonstrations on the streets of Dhaka. He urged everyone to remain patient during these challenging times.
Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Poet Abdul Hai Sikder, BFUJ acting president Obaidur Rahman Shahin, Secretary General Kader Gani Chowdhury, DUJ President Shahidul Islam, and General Secretary Khurshid Alam also spoke at the event.
Additionally, AB Party President Mohammed Mojibur Rahman Bhuiyan Monju, former National Press Club president Kamal Uddin Sabuj, and former National Press Club general secretary Elias Khan were present.
