Decision made during meeting chaired by BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman

Update : 14 Jan 2025, 04:44 PM

The BNP has formed two special committees to address and present detailed discussions to the nation on the continuous rise in commodity prices and cybersecurity.

This decision was made during the regular meeting of the party’s Standing Committee on Monday night, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said during a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

Highlighting the Standing Committee’s decisions, Fakhrul mentioned that the cybersecurity ordinance was discussed in detail during the meeting.

"A decision was taken to hold a press conference providing more detailed information about this law. For this purpose, a committee was formed, chaired by Standing Committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan and including Prof AKM Wahiduzzaman and Barrister Kaiser Kamal. This committee will prepare a report on the issue promptly."

Fakhrul continued: "The Standing Committee expressed deep concern over the continuous rise in commodity prices. The rising costs of essential goods, increasing inflation, and hikes in VAT and other taxes will negatively impact the economy."

"A decision was also made to organize a press conference with detailed information on this matter. A committee was formed with Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury as convener and the party chairperson’s adviser Ismail Jabirullah as a member. This committee will also prepare a detailed report promptly."

The Standing Committee meeting, chaired by BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, was attended by many other senior leaders.

Fakhrul said since the Election Commission has already been formed, there is no reason for the national parliamentary elections to be delayed.

He added that holding local government elections before the national parliamentary elections is not justified. "The elections can be held by July. The Standing Committee calls on the interim government, Election Commission, and all political parties to reach a consensus on this matter."
