Jamaat-Police clash injures 10 in capital

Update : 04 Sep 2013, 09:15 AM

Ten people were injured on Wednesday morning in a clash between police and Jamaat-e-Islami activists in the capital’s Bata Signal area on Elephant Road.

Around 60 Jamaat activists had brought out a procession on Elephant Road around 9am protesting against the removal of convicted war criminals and wartime collaborators from the voter list, according to witnesses.

Sources said the activists threw brickbats at police during the procession at Bata Signal and adjacent areas.

Later, police fired a few rounds of rubber bullets and lobbed teargas shells into crowd, leaving at least 10 people injured including a police officer.

Meanwhile, the activists also vandalised some vehicles in the area, including a police van.

Dhanmondi Police Station Officer In-charge Masud Karim confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.

New Market Police Station sources said four people were held for interrogation in connection to matter.

Earlier on Monday, the cabinet approved the draft of the Voter List (second amendment) Act 2013 with provisions to scrap wartime collaborators and convicted war criminals from voting rights.

On Tuesday, Jamaat announced agitation programme in the capital for Wednesday, protesting against the draft approved by cabinet.

Their key ally, BNP, had also condemned the cabinet move citing reasons ‘it was against humanity, illegal and against the rule of law.’
