Samantha Sharmin, the spokesperson for the National Citizens Committee, has accused the Awami League of attempting to monopolize the history of the 1971 Liberation War, alleging that the party seeks to erase the contributions of intellectuals who participated in the struggle.
She made these remarks while speaking to reporters at the Martyred Intellectuals Memorial in Mirpur on Saturday morning.
“The Awami League has never owned up to the full spectrum of Bangladesh's struggles,” Sharmin said. “Now, they are trying to pocket the history of 1971 and undermine the intellectuals who played a vital role in the liberation war.”
Sharmin also noted: “The popular uprising of 2024 restored the people's confidence. Moving forward, we believe the young leadership emerging from this coup will steer Bangladesh towards progress and recognition on the global stage.”
Akhtar Hossain, the member secretary of the National Citizens Committee, emphasized unity in the face of conspiracies.
“As long as the sacrifices of those martyred in July and August remain etched in our hearts, our unity will remain unshaken. No matter how many schemes are devised, the people of Bangladesh will stand firm and resist them,” he said.
