BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said that the party is committed to implementing its 31-point reform agenda in Bangladesh. According to him, the necessary reforms, including electoral reforms, will be implemented swiftly based on a national consensus before the elections.
“No one needs to worry about reforms. We will carry out the reforms,” he said while addressing the seventh national conference of the Gono Forum at the Engineers Institute auditorium in the capital yesterday.
Amir Khasru further said: “In the coming days, we aim to return ownership of the country to the people through an election. This is our goal. For those raising concerns about reforms, we proposed the 31-point reform plan long ago. These points encompass everything necessary to achieve the future vision of Bangladesh, and we will implement them.”
He emphasized the importance of an interim government, saying: “We fully support the interim government and are committed to working with it. There is no alternative but for the interim government to peacefully transfer power through a democratic process. We all must move forward together to ensure this.”
The BNP leader also highlighted the challenges posed by various groups trying to destabilize the country. He said: “The supporters of dictatorship are attempting to create instability in different ways—sometimes through the Ansar rebellion, sometimes by exploiting minority groups or creating chaos with autorickshaws. These efforts aim to disrupt peace. While we have removed dictatorship today, we must remain united to preserve our unity. The current events are not good news for the nation.”
He added: “Various groups and organizations are coming forward with different demands. During the tenure of an interim government, we must identify the forces working behind these demands and understand their sources.”
Referring to the broader vision of national unity, Amir Khasru said: “In today’s context, we dream of building a new Bangladesh. The people are united, the nation is united, and political parties share a common vision of the Bangladesh we want for the future.”
He also confirmed that the government formed after the elections will be a national government responsible for implementing the 31-point reforms. “We are committed to this plan for the nation,” he added.
Addressing communal tensions, Amir Khasru said: “I won’t deny that there are communal issues in our country. However, the instability being portrayed does not reflect the reality of Bangladesh. This is not our Bangladesh.”
Calling for vigilance, he remarked, “Incidents like the demolition of the Bangladesh embassy in Kolkata and the reactions in various countries are concerning. However, such unrest is not typical of the people of Bangladesh. We must remain cautious and vigilant to ensure that the dream of building the future Bangladesh is not hindered, allowing us to return to a peaceful democratic process.”
The conference was presided over by Dr Kamal Hossain. Among the speakers were former President of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), JSD General Secretary Nazmul Haque Prodhan, Biplobi Workers Party General Secretary Saiful Haque, and Gono Forum Coronation Committee Chairman Mostafa Mohsin Montu.
