The Vice-President of Bangladesh once held the second highest constitutional office during the country’s presidential system.
This role was introduced on April 17, 1971, with the first Government of Bangladesh but was abolished shortly after the war with the adoption of a new constitution introducing a parliamentary republic.
In 1975, the vice-presidency was reinstated through the fourth amendment, reviving the presidential system.
However, in 1991, then-acting president Shahabuddin Ahmed dissolved the post following a constitutional referendum that led to the twelfth amendment, restoring the parliamentary system of governance.
The Deputy Prime Minister of Bangladesh was the second highest-ranking official in the government and the parliament.
In the Prime Minister’s absence, the Deputy Prime Minister could oversee Cabinet functions and other ministries.
The position was introduced on April 15, 1979, and dissolved on December 6, 1990, by acting president Shahabuddin Ahmed.
