A Dhaka court has placed former prime minister Sheikh Hasina's former principal secretary Abul Kalam Azad and Dhaka Metropolitan Awami League Treasurer Humayun Kabir on a seven-day remand in connection with the murder of Jubo Dal leader Shamim.
The order was issued by the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on Sunday.
Earlier, Sub-Inspector (SI) Nazmul Hashan of Paltan police station, the investigating officer in the case, had requested a 10-day remand for both accused.
In response, the defence lawyer submitted a bail petition seeking to cancel the remand.
Following a hearing, Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman granted a seven-day remand.
Abul Kalam Azad, who previously served as principal secretary under former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and as a former member of parliament for Jamalpur-5, was arrested on Saturday while hiding in a house in Kalabagan, Dhaka.
Azad was appointed principal secretary of the Prime Minister's Office on February 16, 2015.
Prior to this, he had served as secretary in the same office and also held positions as secretary of the Economic Relations Division and the Power Division.
The case stems from the October 28, 2023, political clashes between the BNP and the Awami League in Dhaka. On that day, the BNP held a grand rally as part of their central program, while the Awami League organized a counter rally. Amid the violence, Jubo Dal leader Shamim was killed. A case related to his death was filed at Paltan police station on September 24, 2024.
