  • 671 leaders, workers have resigned

In an immediate reaction following the resignation of 671 party leaders earlier in the day, Jatiya Party (JaPa) Chairman GM Quader on Thursday said that many people are disrupting party activities, and it is the only trouble they have to face.

"Our party is doing well. Many people want to disrupt party activities. We know these but cannot do anything. Still, we will try to do something about it,” he told Bangla Tribune.

Earlier in the day, 671 leaders of the party’s Dhaka metropolitan unit announced their resignations at a press conference at the National Press Club. According to another source, the number is 968.

Jahangir Alam Pathan, the party's central vice president and former member secretary of the Dhaka Metropolitan North unit, read out a written statement at the press conference.

Expelled leaders of the party, including Shafiqul Islam Sentu, Sunil Shubo Roy, Yahiya Chowdhury, and Amanat Hossain, were present at the press conference.

The aggrieved leaders blamed GM Quader and General Secretary Mujibul Haque Chunnu for the party’s failure in the 12th parliamentary election.

GM Quader said: "JaPa will remain where it is. It has nothing to do with all these. It's a mystery to me why the media is propagandizing it like this.

“Some 671 people have resigned. How many people were there (at the press conference)? Were they all JaPa members? Why are they publishing the news without verifying it,” Quader questioned.

He added: “The president of 21 units of Dhaka city has come to meet me for a program. They were with me yesterday (Wednesday). What is the list of those who have resigned? Are they members of the JaPa? It was necessary to verify the facts and then publish the news.”
