Minister of Health and Family Welfare Zahid Maleque on Tuesday criticized the BNP saying that even though BNP forgot about misrule during their reign, the general people still remember Bangladesh becoming the champion of corruption five times.

The minister said: “The people now understand that the BNP wants to gain power by doing arson and damaging people's lives and property. During  BNP's misrule, BNP could not stock food, could not provide electricity, or medical care, and became a five-time world champion in corruption. They cannot see with eyes.”

He said: “BNP can be blind, but the people are not. They can understand how safe the country is in Sheikh Hasina’s hand, and how unsafe it is in BNP’s hand.”

The health minister said these things at the inauguration of the newly constructed staff quarters adjacent to the doctor's quarters of the National Heart Institute and Hospital in the capital.

Zahid Maleque said: “Sheikh Hasina's development is reaching every corner of Bangladesh. Padma bridge, metro rail, subway, flyover, achieving self-sufficiency in food, elimination of electricity shortage, more than doubling of hospital beds in each district, additional dialysis beds of 10 beds in each district hospital, eight 1500-bed cancer kidney hospitals in eight divisions; Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has made progress in all areas. Starting from providing 30 types of medicines free of charge by running community clinics in remote areas, and achieving fifth place in the world in combating the Covid-19 pandemic. But BNP does not see any of these.”

He said: “BNP does not have the power to oust the government.”

Indicating the development in the health sector, the health minister said: "According to the calculations, only in the government hospitals of the country, an average of 36 crore people are receiving services every month.”

Regarding the appointment of doctors and nurses, the health minister said: “16,000 doctors have been appointed in the last five years. 20,000 nurses have been appointed, and thousands of other posts have also been appointed.”

In the event, the health minister announced that 25% of heart rings (stents) will be provided free of cost to patients who come for treatment at the National Heart Institute.
