Senior politician, former minister, and eminent lawyer Dr Kamal Hossain has announced his resignation from the post of president of Gono Forum.
He made the announcement at the party's special national council meeting at the National Press Club on Friday.
Gono Forum Treasurer Shah Nuruzzaman read out the written statement on behalf of Dr Kamal Hossain in his presence.
In a written statement, Dr Kamal Hossain said: "Since the inception of the party, I have been trying to work unitedly to solve the national problems and crises. But considering my age and physical condition, it is no longer possible to actively serve as president. In such a situation, I am announcing to resign from all political activities and from the post of president of Gono Forum.”
Dr Kamal Hossain in his letter added that he will try to contribute to the country as much as he can personally. "I will forever maintain my sincerity, emotions, sympathy, support, and guidance for the party, its leaders, and members. In this situation, I would request the councillors present in today's special national council of Gono Forum to announce a new leadership to strengthen and organize the party.”
He expressed hope that the central committee formed on Friday’s council will play an important role in national politics in the coming days.
“You (Gono Forum) will always make active efforts to take Bangladesh forward in the spirit of democracy, stability and above all the Liberation War. May the Gono Forum win. May the people win,” he added.
Dr Kamal Hossain is a founding leader, lawyer and politician of Bangladesh.
He is known as the "father of the Bangladeshi constitution" and is regarded as an icon of secular democracy in the Indian subcontinent.
