The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has announced that it will hold mass processions in Dhaka on Saturday to demand the resignation of the Awami League government and a fair election under a non-partisan government.
The party’s Dhaka North and South units will hold the programs separately at 3pm.
The BNP has called on the leaders of like-minded parties and alliances to carry out the program simultaneously.
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the program at a press conference organized at BNP Central Office in Naya Paltan on Wednesday afternoon.
He expressed concerns about the swift resolution and sentencing of cases involving BNP and opposition leaders, including the revival of decade-old cases.
Rizvi alleged that these actions were designed to stifle opposition movements and facilitate one-party elections.
He commented that the government has taken the judiciary to a place of distrust by using the courts.
Rizvi claimed: "Dhaka South city unit BNP acting member secretary Tanveer Ahmed Robin has been arrested again in an old case, regardless of the court's bail."
On August 19, the BNP's Dhaka South and North units held a procession to demand the release of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and her treatment abroad.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir demanded the immediate release of Khaleda Zia, a former prime minister, and said the government would be held responsible if anything happened to her.
