BNP ready to unveil final one-point movement outline

Party hints at help from international representatives

Update : 09 Jul 2023, 11:38 PM

The BNP is preparing to announce a final one-point movement for what they call the "fall of the government" on Wednesday.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will announce the movement at a rally in front of the party's central office in Dhaka's Naya Paltan. Like-minded political parties are set to announce similar programs during separate rallies at different points in the capital the same day.

Regarding the finalisation of the one-point movement, Mirza Fakhrul on Sunday said: "We have discussed the future program of the simultaneous movement through meetings with different like-minded parties. You know how many points we have given on the basis of movement. We have discussed the details of how to bring it closer, when the one-phase movement can be started, and how it can be started. Now, we will act accordingly."

According to party sources, they will hold a rally in front of the central office of the BNP in Naya Paltan tomorrow afternoon. Various organs and affiliated organisations of the party have been instructed to prepare for the rally.

Alliance members, help of international community

Although the initial decision to announce the rally on Wednesday has been taken, the date will be confirmed after BNP meets with like-minded political parties and preparations are completed, BNP Standing Committee member Selima Rahman said.

The BNP held a meeting with the Gano Forum and the liaison committee of the People's Party at the chairperson's office in Gulshan on Friday. In the meeting, they discussed the ongoing movement and how to take it forward.

BNP leaders said some discussions have been held with the allied parties over the last few days. Discussions have also been held with Ganatantrik Bam Oikya and Gonotontro Moncho.

Gano Forum General Secretary Advocate Subrata Chowdhury said: "As public opinion has been created in Bangladesh, we are also getting enough help and support from international circles. We have agreed through the meeting that we will present a joint declaration to the nation at the earliest, and then we will force this government to resign through a mass movement with mass participation across Bangladesh. We will conduct a fair and impartial election in Bangladesh under a non-partisan government."

A senior leader said the BNP has expressed its view to inform foreign delegations that it has reached the final stage of the movement to "unseat the government" and that 36 political parties will soon announce similar programs.

BNP Joint Secretary General Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, who was present at the meetings with political coalitions, said the party will present its demands to the international community and expects cooperation from them.

Last year, the BNP staged a series of rallies in divisional cities and hoped that its December 10 rally in Dhaka would ensure the fall of the government while like-minded parties observed programs simultaneously. Later, the party hinted that it would intensify its movement for a neutral caretaker government after Eid-ul-Azha.

At a recent meeting in Chittagong, BNP Vice Chairman Barkat Ullah Bulu said: "If Sheikh Hasina is to be removed, everyone will have to take to the streets."

In the meantime, Mirza Fakhrul met BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at her residence to inquire about her health on Saturday evening, BNP Chairperson's press wing member Shairul Kabir Khan said.

Furthermore, Khaleda Zia's son and acting chairman Tarique Rahman has held discussions virtually with the party's leaders over the movement.

BNP Senior Leader Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku said: "We have held rallies, marches, and united the youth all over the country. Just as various preparations have to be made for building a foundation, we have prepared for the final movement. We will now move on to the one-point movement."
