The BNP's past tenures have undermined regional security in South Asia, Dr Ashikur Rahman Shanto has said.

“By offering state patronage to ULFA to undertake their separatist operations in North-East India, BNP became a major source of social and political instability for both Bangladesh and India,” he said on Sunday.

Dr Ashikur Rahman, an executive member of Bangladesh Awami Jubo League and senior economist at the Policy Research Institute (PRI), made these comments at the Jubo League meeting in Bhola.

The ULFA or United Liberation Front of Asom is an armed separatist organisation operating in the Northeast Indian state of Assam.

Dr Rahman said: "By forming a political alliance with Jamaat-e-Islam, BNP harnessed close relationship with ISI which allowed Islamabad to dictate Bangladesh's foreign policy. Thankfully under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh was able to undo the damages done by BNP and her positive and constructive foreign policy has allowed the region to attain peace.”

He also added: "Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has shown zero- tolerance to cross border terrorism and her iron fist treatment of islamic militancy has allowed Bangladesh to earn tangible credibility at the World stage that our country under her leadership stands for peace and regional stability."

The meeting was presided over by Mostaq Ahmed Shahin, the local Jubo League leader and former President of Bhola District Chhatro League.
