The health condition of hospitalized BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has not improved, senior party leaders said, describing her condition as “very critical”.
The BNP chief has become feeble due to bleeding through vomiting and defecating, according to a physician on her medical board.
Based on feedback from a meeting of the board, the doctor said Khaleda Zia has undergone several new tests, including a colonoscopy.
Moreover, the three-time prime minister is being administered oxygen due to breathing issues, said her personal physician AZM Zahid Hossain.
The medical board formed to review the BNP chief’s physical condition met on Wednesday afternoon. In addition to the members, five other doctors from Evercare Hospital, where Khaleda is now admitted, also attended the meeting.
After talking with the doctors, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said Khaleda Zia is “fighting for her life”.
The medical board has stressed sending her to the US, UK or Germany for advanced treatment, said the senior BNP leader.
Meanwhile, BNP Standing Committee Member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said the doctors are trying their utmost but Khaleda Zia’s treatment “is not possible here”.
“She needs to be taken abroad without any delay,” he told Dhaka Tribune.
Party insiders said they are seeing an improvement in the government’s attitude towards overseas medical treatment for Khaleda. They hope that the former premier will be allowed to go abroad on humanitarian grounds regardless of political conflicts.
Khaleda, 76, was readmitted to Evercare Hospital on November 13, six days after she had returned home from the same hospital.
The BNP chief's physicians have said she has been suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, ophthalmological and dental complications.
A physician in her medical team says Khaleda is now suffering from a critical cardiac problem, her blood sugar level is out of control and the haemoglobin level in her blood has dropped.
The BNP chief’s family had applied to the government twice in May and August seeking permission to take her abroad for treatment, but the government denied it, saying that there was no scope for a convict to get such an opportunity.
