Hefazat-e Islam Secretary General Junaid Babunagari, who was undergoing treatment at the capital’s BIRDEM hospital, might be taken to Singapore within a day or two for treatment due to deterioration of his physical condition, said sources of his organisation and family members.
“The process to send him to Singapore is on. He would be sent as soon as its finished,” assistant secretary of Hefazat’s publicity wing, Altaf Hossain, said.
Babunagari’s son-in-law Moulana Md Abdullah told the Dhaka Tribune: “My father-in-law is suffering from various physical complications including diabetes, kidney ailments, high blood pressure, increase of potassium in blood and water in the lungs.”
The 65-year-old Hefajat leader was arrested on May 6, a day after the Dhaka-siege programme and Motijheel sit-in by the Islamist platform, which saw day-long clashes and mayhem around the capital that lead to death and injury of a number of people including law enforcers.
The court allowed the police to grill Babunagari for four days in the murder case and nine days each in the two other cases filed for explosion of crude bombs and obstructing the law enforcers from performing their duties
On the 15th day of the 23-day remand in the three cases, the Hefazat leader was sent to jail after he confessed before a magistrate on that day. He was admitted to BIRDEM hospital when his physical condition deteriorated. He obtained bail from court on May 29.
