Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Thursday said that the BNP was the main impediment to democracy and progress in the politics of Bangladesh.

He made the remark while talking to reporters after paying homage to Shaheed Sheikh Jamal at the city's Banani graveyard on the occasion of his 69th birth anniversary.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, placed separate wreaths on Jamal’s grave on behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League.

Presidium Member Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, organizing secretaries Ahmed Hossain, Advocate Afzal Hossain and SM Kamal, Publicity and Publication Secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, and Science and Technology Affairs Secretary Abdus Sabur were also present.

Quader also accused BNP founder Ziaur Rahman of being an accomplice of the killers of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members in 1975.

Zia's working relations with the coup plotters in politics of the country had become the biggest obstacle to institutionalization of democracy in the country.

Calling upon all the pro-liberation forces to get united under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he said: "All must be united to stop the politics of killing and conspiracy from the soil of Bengal forever."

Responding to a statement of BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Quader said: "Only words of destruction are found in his words. He only knows destruction because BNP has destroyed everything to stay in power. To this end, they do not see the country's development with their eyes now. In fact, the BNP is destroying itself through its negative politics."

About the BNP's demand for formation of a national government, he said that the BNP had been in a hotchpotch position last time on this matter, and the party would do the same this time.

“The BNP leaders get isolated from the people due to their engagement in the politics of conspiracy,” said Quader.
