AL fears sabotage following Kamaruzzaman verdict

Update : 09 May 2013, 03:37 AM

Awami League on Wednesday asked its leaders and activists to remain alert so that “the BNP-Jamaat alliance cannot carry out any anarchic activities on Thursday” after the International Crimes Tribunal’s verdict on Jamaat leader Kamaruzzaman’s case.

ICT 2 will announce its verdict on charges of crimes against humanity against Jamaat-e-Islami’s Senior Assistant Secretary General Muhammad Kamaruzzaman on Thursday.

“No reason to trust BNP-Jamaat for their recent destructive activities. So we all have to remain alert,” AL presidium member and former Home Minister Mohammad Nasim said at a press briefing at party president Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi office.

The AL leader hoped that the verdict against Kamaruzzaman would fulfil people’s expectations.

Nasim termed BNP’s allegation of the government “massacring and hiding the bodies of Hefazat activists” the greatest falsehood in history. “It’s the era of technology. It is impossible to hide bodies like that,” he said.

Hefazat-e-Islam, the Islamist group whose rally at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel was dispersed in the early hours of Monday, accused police of killing and hiding the bodies of 2,500-3000 activists. BNP also made similar claims.

Responding to a query, Nasim said BNP, Jamaat and Hefazat was a single party and Khaleda Zia was its leader. “Khaleda Zia’s conspiracy to oust the government still continues,” he alleged.

BNP-led 18-party Alliance enforced a dawn to dusk nationwide general strike on Wednesday.

From the morning, AL Dhaka City unit and different front organisations of the party brought out anti-strike processions from the party’s central office at Bangabandhu Avenue.

Addressing an anti-strike human chain organised by Krishok League at Zero Point, State Minister for Law Kamrul Islam alleged that Inter-service Intelligence of Pakistan (ISI) had financed Hefajat-e-Islam’s Dhaka siege programme on Sunday.

Blaming BNP-Jamaat for backing all destructive activities, he said that the culprits would be brought to book. “Anyone involved with the violence will not be spared,” Kamrul said.
