Journalist leaders on Thursday gave an ultimatum to the government to release Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman within 24 hours.
They also condemned the arrest of Mahmudur Rahman and urged the government to release him immediately.
“Mahmudur Rahman must be released by 10 am tomorrow (Friday), otherwise, the journalists will hold a protest rally at 11 am on that day,” said Ruhul Amin Gazi, president of a faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ).
He said while addressing a protest rally jointly organised by BFUJ and Dhaka Union of Journalists in front of the National Press Club.
Police arrested Mahmudur Rahman from his Karwanbazar office on charge of sedition on Thursday morning.
A Dhaka court placed him on a 13-day remand in the afternoon in three cases filed with Tejgaon police station.
