A number of 37 people have been killed and hundreds injured in clashes between Muslims and Hindus

BNP has expressed concern over the violence going on in India's capital New Delhi over the new citizenship law.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, BNP said the party had issued a statement earlier predicting that the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) passed by the Indian parliament would pose a threat for the communal harmony in the subcontinent.

"BNP believes, the incumbent elected government of India will resolve the ongoing crisis through ensuring the citizens' fundamental rights and safety irrespective of creed and caste following the constitutional spirit," it said.

The party expected that the Indian government would play a due role to restore peace, harmony, safety, and stability of the region, the statement added.

The violence in the Indian capital began over the disputed new citizenship law on Monday but led to clashes between Muslims and Hindus in which 37 people were killed and hundreds injured. Many suffered gunshot wounds, while arson, looting and stone-throwing also took place.
