What can you tell us about the council preparations?
Bangladesh Awami League is one of the oldest parties in the country. We have a glorious history. From the very beginning, the party has fought for a secular and democratic country. We have organized 20 national councils since 1949. I can say that each and every council is important for the nation. Every council is a part of history. At every council, we strive to modernize it with current times to achieve party goals. We also rearrange party goals, strategies and work plan.
What is the main focus of this council?
There are two main goals. One is to update the party charters and policy, and the other to improve the party discipline and organization. We have never derailed from the spirit of working for a secular and democratic country. It will be a constant.
Who are the most likely candidates to join the central committee?
Those who are dedicated, brave, and took risks for the party, attended party programs beyond fear, they should be part of the new Central Working Committee. We are also thinking about some young faces, because we want to utilize youth power and their creativity. I think the youth should be a priority in the recruitment.
Are you expecting any changes in leadership?
One thing I can boldly say is that Sheikh Hasina is irreplaceable as the president of the Awami League. She has been leading the party since she was 34. Party members nationwide want her to continue to lead the party. Her charismatic leadership is an asset. We want her to lead as the party chief and the prime minister as long as her physical conditions permit.
What about the general secretary?
I think the current general secretary has performed well. The party president is going to evaluate his performance. She regularly speaks to grassroots leaders and keeps tabs on what everyone is up to. Whoever she chooses as the general secretary will be good for the party.
There are some within the party who want you as the general secretary. What do you have to say about it?
I have no idea. Personally, I am not a candidate for the position. Everything depends on Sheikh Hasina.
What are the challenges ahead of our country right now?
Our challenges are changing every day. Once we demanded food security. Now that we have sufficient food, our demand is nutritious food. We want to ensure that the rural life has the facilities of urban life. We are looking for domestic and international investments in new sectors. We want to provide jobs for the unemployed. We cannot ensure our popularity if we cannot secure jobs for the youth, we need their support.
We have to modernize our agriculture sector to make it profitable. We also have to develop new breeds of paddy and other crops to adapt to climate change.
Is there any possibility of separation between the party and government?
It all depends on the party chief. It has not been discussed in the party charters. In my opinion, if our party decides, then anyone among the cabinet will leave their post to serve the party. I personally would be glad to follow such an order, because I place my ideological politics above government portfolio.
What can you tell us about the third generation of Bangabandhu’s family formally joining the party?
It does not matter if they join formally or not. They are special to us. They can join whenever they want. They already work for the party behind the scenes. Right now, we want to celebrate the Mujib Year and 50 years of independence.
