Barrister Rumeen Farhana, BNP's lone MP-elect from a seat reserved for women in parliament, has taken oath as a lawmaker.
Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury administered her oath at the parliament complex on Sunday.
Chief whip of Jatiya Sangshad Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury, and whips Iqbalur Rahim, Abu Sayeed Al Mahmood Swapon and lawmaker Captain (retd) AB Tajul Islam also attended the function.
After taking oath, Rumeen told reporters that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia had been kept in jail for over one-and-a-half years in a false and politically motivated case.
"Considering (Khaleda's) age, social status and merit of the case, she is eligible to get bail but she has been kept (incarcerated). She is being deprived of her right to bail," she said.
The lawmaker demanded the immediate release of Khaleda Zia from prison.
Rumeen, assistant international affairs secretary, submitted her nomination form to the Election Commission on May 20, as her party had chosen her as the lone candidate for election to the reserved seat.
On May 28, the Election Commission declared Rumeen, daughter of late Language Movement hero Oli Ahad, elected from the seat.
BNP got one reserved seat for women, in proportionate to its five elected parliament members.
The 50 seats kept reserved for women are distributed among political parties as per their number of seats in parliament.
