Most of the parties alleged that the formation of the new EC did not fulfil people’s expectations. Jatiya Party (JaPa), the main opposition in the House, welcomed the chief election commissioner (CEC) and his four deputies,.
JaPa Secretary General Ruhul Amin Howlader also in a party media briefing said: “CEC KM Nurul Huda is a good and honest person, and also a freedom fighter. We hope he will play an impartial role in all elections during his tenure.”
Claiming that he personally knows Huda, Ruhul hoped all polls under the EC will be free and fair, and acceptable to all parties.
“It’s not a big deal if the search panel considered the names we recommended or not,” he said.
The party also welcomed Begum Kabita Khanam, the first ever female election commissioner, on being appointed at the EC.
Meanwhile, ruling ally Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), in a press note, said the appointment of the CEC and other office bearers reflected the personal choice of the president and the prime minister since the EC was not reformed through complete legal structure.
It is a tough job to assess in advance such an organisation, said the note, adding that it will later reveal evaluations about the commission after observing its activities.
The press note also said CPB wants the new EC to perform its duties with “a straight backbone”.
In a party press statement Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal General Seretary Khalequzzaman, echoing the same, said it was a great opportunity to help resolve the ongoing political unrest through an acceptable EC, but in vain.
The EC reformation process could also help regain public trust on the constitutional body, he said.
