Fakhrul: Both govt and EC need to be impartial for real democracy

Update : 04 Feb 2017, 07:02 PM

The BNP secretary general made the comments at a discussion held at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) arranged by Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (Jagpa) on Saturday afternoon.

Fakhrul said that even if the president forms an impartial Election Commission, the nation would not accept an unfair election.

He alleged that the present search committee was partial to the ruling government, but said BNP had still submitted their names for EC candidates as they “believe in democratic systems”.

We have information that [the search committee] have already submitted the names for forming the EC to the president, but we also know that what the Awami League (AL) says will go,” he added.

Furthermore, he described the collection of names by the Election Commission from parties other than the ruling AL as eyewash.

Fakhrul said: “We don't have trust in the search committee. If they form a neutral Election commission, then their names will go down in history. If not, then they will go down in the darker part of history. Either way, they will not escape history's grasp.

Addressing the president, he said: “You should have called all registered parties regarding formation of the EC, but you didn't do this. We don't expect this from you, as you are the guardian of Bangladesh and all of its political parties, not the leader of a party.”

Fakhrul added that he would continue to talk about democracy even if he was going to “hang” for it, as the people of Bangladesh have been conducting movements for democracy since British colonial rule.

The BNP secretary general also alleged that the AL had resorted to using false cases against opposition parties who were not protected by political deals, as the ruling party was out of “ammunition”.

He claimed that the Awami Leage were not the ones carrying out the government, but rather that the power rested in the hands of some “uniformed individuals”.

In addition, Fakhrul said that the media did not report the truth as they feared torture at the hands of the government.
