Barrister Abdur Razzaq passes away

He died at the age of 74

Barrister Abdur Razzaq, former central executive council member and former assistant secretary general of the Jamaat-e-Islami and senior advocate of the Bangladesh Supreme Court, passed away on Sunday afternoon at the age of 74.

His first funeral prayer was held at 8:30pm at Taqwa Mosque in Dhanmondi, attended by Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman along with central and city-level leaders.  

The prayer was led by the deceased’s son, Barrister Ehsan A Siddiq. 

The second janaza is scheduled to be held at 11am on Monday on the Supreme Court Bar Council premises, while the third will take place at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after the Zuhr prayer. 

The Jamaat-e-Islami has urged party members and the public to attend the funeral prayers. 

Following the final janaza, Barrister Razzaq will be laid to rest at Azimpur graveyard. 

A brief profile of Barrister Abdur Razzaq 

Born in 1944 in Sheikhlal village of Mathiura union, Beanibazar upazila in Sylhet, Abdur Razzaq notably served as a defence lawyer in the war crimes trials. 

He also briefly served as an adviser to the AB Party. 

Facing politically motivated cases and threats under the Sheikh Hasina government, Razzaq left Bangladesh for the United Kingdom on December 18, 2013. 

In February 2019, he resigned from his post as assistant secretary general of the Jamaat-e-Islami. 

He earned his BA (honours) degree from MC College in Sylhet and an MA from the University of Dhaka.  

In 1980, he qualified as a barrister from Lincoln's Inn, UK. 

He practised law in London until November 1985. 

Upon returning to Bangladesh in 1986, he was enrolled as a lawyer. He was admitted to the High Court Division in 1988 and the Appellate Division in 1994.  

In 1990, he founded a legal firm named The Law Counsel. 

In 2002, he became a senior advocate in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. 

Barrister Razzaq leaves behind two sons and a daughter. Both his sons are also barristers and practising in the Supreme Court.
