Tahmina Rahman, Bangladesh and South Asia regional director of Article 19, has been honoured as a member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE), for her contribution to the freedom of expression and right to information in Bangladesh. Article 19 is a British-based international human rights organisation focused on safeguarding the right to freedom of expression around the globe. The organisation takes its name from the respective article of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Tahmina has had a distinguished career in the promotion of human rights, having conducted human rights projects on the freedom of expression for about a decade, according to an Article 19 press release. In the capacity of regional director of Article 19, she not only advocated for media reforms but has also represented civil society organisations on various National Committees of the Bangladesh Government. Tahmina was particularly active in providing support to online communicators following the heinous attacks on bloggers between 2016-16. Tahmina Rahman has also worked towards stamping out gender-based discrimination and censorship in the Bangladesh media, promoting tolerance within the framework of the Rabat Plan of Action in the country. Tahmina studied law at the University of Dhaka and has a Master in Laws from the University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies. She was a McArthur fellow at Harvard University and has recently been awarded the Franco-German Prize for Human Rights and Rule of Law.
