Update : 14 Jan 2018, 06:51 PM
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Sunday visited ailing Birangana (1971 Liberation War heroine) Rama Chowdhury, who has been receiving treatment at a private hospital in Chittagong. Obaidul, also the Road, Transport and Bridges minister, also enquired about Rama Chowdhury’s psychical condition and spent some time with the ailing freedom fighter on Sunday. He said the government would take all necessary initiatives to ensure her better treatment. “Her [Rama Chowdhury] condition is unstable at the moment. We [the government] have been considering moving her to Dhaka as soon her her physical condition stabilizes,” Obaidul said. Chittagong Civil Surgeon Dr Azizur Rahman Siddiqui, Awami League central leaders Aminul Islam and Biplob Barua, leaders of Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) Dr Muzibul Haque Khan, Dr Foysal Iqbal Chowdhury, Rama’s son Jahar Lal Chowdhury, publisher of Rama’s books Alauddin Khokon were also present at the hospital during Obaidul’s visit. According to Dr Siddiqui, Rama has been suffering from multiple old-age complications and a medical board was formed for her treatment. Besides, her doctors said Rama had suffered a household accident and broke her right femur on December 24 last year. She also developed a bed sore as she was put in traction [the application of a sustained pull on a limb or muscle, especially in order to maintain the position of a fractured bone or to correct a deformity]. Dr AKM Arif Uddin Ahmed, the chief executive officer of Medical Centre (Private) Ltd, said: “Rama was hospitalized with an intertrochanteric hip fracture. In case of such injury, the patient must undergo a surgery for fixing a type of orthopaedic implant known as Dynamic Hip Screw (DHS).” However, Rama should be shifted to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation for better treatment, Dr Arif recommended.
