Lawmakers from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its alliance staged a protest and walked out during the president’s speech at the maiden session of the 13th parliament on Thursday.
After Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed invited President Mohammed Shahabuddin to deliver his address in the House at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, MPs from Jamaat and the National Citizen Party (NCP) stood up in protest.
Opposition lawmakers were seen holding placards inside the chamber.
One of the placards read: “July niye gaddari cholbe na” (No betrayal over July).
The speaker repeatedly urged the protesting MPs to maintain order in the House.
However, as the president began delivering his speech, the opposition lawmakers continued their protest, creating a noisy scene in the chamber before eventually walking out of the session.
All alliance members, including leader of the opposition Shafiqur Rahman and opposition chief whip Nahid Islam, joined the walkout.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin continued his speech despite the protest.
