Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has been named as the leader of the opposition in the 13th Parliament, while the party’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher has been named deputy leader of the opposition.
Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and a key ally in the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance, has been made opposition chief whip in parliament.
Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair, assistant secretary general of Jamaat and head of its central publicity and media department, confirmed the appointments to the media on Tuesday evening.
Jamaat lawmakers took their oaths as members of the 13th Parliament on Tuesday, despite earlier threats to boycott the ceremony after the BNP declined to be sworn in as members of the Constitution Reform Council.
Jamaat MPs and independents began taking their oaths shortly after noon at the Parliament’s oath chamber. Among those seen in the front row were Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman, party leaders ATM Azhar, Mujibur Rahman, and Abdullah Mohammad Taher, along with former BNP leader and independent MP Rumeen Farhana.
