Opposition Chief Whip and Jatiya Party MP elected from Kishoreganj Mujibul Haque Chunnu on Tuesday came down heavily on the government for a price hike of electricity and gas.
“The government’s move will add misery to common people ahed of Ramadan,” he said while speaking on a point of order.
Chunnu also demanded the withdrawal of the government decision for the sake of the people.
He said that people are already in a miserable condition. “When common people go to the market... there is no control over the price of goods.”
Chunnu also said that there is no supervision from the government. People are living a very unbearable life.
“In this situation, the government has increased the price of electricity from 34 to 70 paisa per unit. Gas prices have also increased.”
The opposition chief whip said that the government used to say that thousands of crores of Taka are being spent in paying subsidies.
“But how will you reduce the subsidies? People are being crushed due to the price hike of essentials. An increase in the price of electricity means that the prices of many goods will increase with it. Because we produce many things with electricity.”
He mentioned that the government was elected by the people just a month ago with high hopes and that the government increases the electricity and gas prices before Ramadan is intolerable.
Chunnu also said that many garment factories in Narayanganj and Gazipur are gas-dependent and the decision to increase gas prices will affect the factories that are already suffering in the gas crisis .
He requested the government at least not to increase the price of gas and electricity at this moment.
“I would request the government not to increase the price of gas and electricity right now. You can think about this when the economy will come to a normal state,” Chunnu said.
