The system loss in electricity distribution has dropped to 7.6% in Bangladesh, against the global standard rate of 7.7%, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid has said.
The system loss was 44% during the Jatiya Party led government, and 22% during the BNP led government, but it has come down to 7% under the tenure of Awami League-led government, he said during his parliament speech on Tuesday.
Around 10 million people had the electricity connections when the Awami League government came to power in 2009, but now 45 million people have electricity connections, he added.
A total 550,000km of transmission lines have been set up, the state minister further said.
Regarding the new fuel price adjustment, Hamid said the price of fuel was $170 when Ukraine-Russia war began in January 2022.
“If we would have hiked the price then, we would have increased it to Tk60 per litre. But we were waiting for the price to come down to make an adjustment,” he said.
When the fuel price came down to $139 in international market, Banglades still it had a difference of Tk40 compared to India, and this is why there was a chance of fuel smuggling to India as well.
“We had to adjust the price keeping in mind about the global situation, fuel crisis, high price of fuel, and risks of fuel smuggling. We have not hiked the price, rather made some adjustments,” said Nasrul Hamid.
The state minister also urged people and opposition lawmakers not to pay heed to rumours that are being spread on social media.
