Miscreants set fire to a memorial built in honour of those killed during the July mass uprising in Chandpur on Friday.

The incident occurred around 1:45pm at the memorial, located on the premises of the town’s Central Shaheed Minar, damaging parts of its lower section.

The Fire Service said the miscreants set fire to tyres at the base of the memorial before fleeing. Firefighters rushed to the scene after being alerted and brought the blaze under control.

Local residents said the attackers used petrol and tyres to set fire to the lower part of the memorial’s platform before leaving the scene. They alerted the Fire Service after the flames began to spread.

Chandpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Foyez Ahmed said a police team was dispatched immediately after receiving information about the incident.

He said the attackers fled after setting the memorial on fire. Police have launched an operation to identify and arrest those responsible.

Additional Superintendent of Police Nadira Noor said investigators had collected CCTV footage and other evidence from the scene.

She added that police across the district were working to track down those involved, with instructions to arrest them as soon as possible.
