Fast bowler Hasan Mahmud claimed 6-90 as Bangladesh fought back strongly to leave the second and final cricket Test against West Indies evenly poised at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium today.
Hasan's superb bowling helped Bangladesh dismiss West Indies for 356 after the visitors had looked set for a much bigger total.
The hosts, however, suffered yet another top-order collapse, which is increasingly becoming a recurring problem. Mushfiqur Rahim and Towhid Hridoy then combined to steady the innings, guiding Bangladesh to 85-3 before bad light forced an early close.
Hridoy was unbeaten on 29, while Mushfiqur was batting on 19 when the umpires called off play.
Nayeem Hasan came in as a makeshift opener after Shadman Islam suffered an ankle injury. However, he failed to withstand an aggressive spell from the West Indies pacers and fell for 5, caught by Brandon King at first slip off Jayden Seales.
Justin Greaves then cut short Tanzid Hasan Tamim's stay at the crease, dismissing him for 16 after debutant Kevin Wickham held on to a stunning catch at cover point.
Shamar Joseph subsequently rattled the stumps of Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who was beaten by the swing, for 18, leaving Bangladesh at 51-3.
Mushfiqur Rahim and Towhid Hridoy, however, managed to weather the West Indies attack before bad light interrupted the proceeding.
Resuming the day at 235-4, West Indies initially appeared poised to take complete control of the match.
But Hasan turned the game around with a double strike. He first bowled Amir Jangoo for 133, ending a 106-run partnership between Jangoo and Justin Greaves. Jangoo added 22 runs to his overnight score before departing.
Hasan then dismissed West Indies captain Roston Chase for a duck with the very next delivery to put himself on a hat-trick.
He appeared to have completed the hat-trick when he trapped Joshua Bishop leg-before, but Bishop successfully reviewed the decision to overturn the on-field call.
Hasan's accuracy and consistency, however, continued to trouble the visitors. He eventually dismissed Bishop for 23 to complete his fifth five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
Greaves, meanwhile, weathered the Bangladesh pace attack and helped West Indies cross the 300-run mark, completing his half-century in the process.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz finally broke Greaves' resistance, dismissing him for 51 to give Bangladesh their first success through spin.
Hasan then claimed his second six-wicket haul in Test cricket by removing Shamar Joseph before Miraz dismissed Jayden Seales to wrap up the West Indies innings.
