The Bangladesh Coast Guard rescued 13 fishermen after their fishing boat developed an engine failure and drifted in the deep sea south of Saint Martin’s Island.
Coast Guard media officer Lt Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon confirmed the matter on Tuesday. He said the fishing boat FV Rifat left Teknaf on September 25 with 13 fishermen for fishing in the sea.
After several days of fishing, the boat was returning to port around 4:00 pm on Monday when its engine broke down. It subsequently drifted uncontrollably in the deep sea south of Saint Martin’s. One of the fishermen called the Coast Guard’s emergency hotline 16111 and sought help.
A Coast Guard vessel launched a rescue operation and located the disabled boat about 12 nautical miles south of Saint Martin’s.
