Bangladesh Coast Guard has seized a large consignment of banned polythene during a special operation in Dhaka’s Lalbagh area.
Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon confirmed the matter afternoon, said a press release.
He said that, acting on a tip-off, Coast Guard Station Pagla conducted the operation from 4 am to 8am on Tuesday near the Iron Bridge area adjacent to the Buriganga River under Lalbagh Police Station.
During the operation, Coast Guard personnel searched a suspicious truck and recovered approximately 24,000 kilograms of banned polythene, with an estimated market value of Tk 4.08 crore.
The seized polythene was later handed over to the Department of Environment in Narayanganj for disposal. The truck, along with its driver and helper, was released after they provided written undertakings.
Lieutenant Commander Sujon said the Coast Guard will continue conducting such operations in the future as part of its efforts to protect the environment.
