Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Saturday inaugurated the construction of 100 houses for the rehabilitation of flood-affected people at Pekua Upazila ground in Cox's Bazar.

The program, organized by the Shamsul Haque Foundation, began at around 11:30am.

Speaking at the event, Salahuddin Ahmed said the government has taken various initiatives, including the construction of sustainable embankments, to prevent floods and storm surges.

He said the government's core political objective is to ensure people's welfare and that, as a government elected by the people's votes, it is committed to standing beside citizens during disasters.

The home minister said: “Bangladesh first, people before power.”

He said the government has undertaken assistance programs not only for families whose homes were damaged, but also for flood-affected farmers, fish farmers and livestock rearers. Those whose seedbeds, saplings or agricultural land were damaged will receive fertilizer, seeds and other agricultural inputs.

He added that surveys would be conducted to assess losses in the fisheries and livestock sectors before assistance is provided.

Salahuddin Ahmed also said initiatives would be taken to quickly repair infrastructure damaged by the floods, including schools, colleges, madrasas and roads. He added that the government would continue working to ensure justice and stand by affected people.

The home minister sought prayers for Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, saying the government is pursuing people-friendly policies to reduce pressure on citizens in their daily lives and deliver public services to their doorsteps.

After the program, Salahuddin Ahmed spoke with members of affected families, inquired about their condition and inspected the distributed relief materials. He later visited several flood-affected areas of Pekua.

Salahuddin Ahmed arrived in Cox's Bazar on Friday on a 2-day visit. On the first day, he visited flood-affected areas in Chakaria and distributed relief among flood victims.
