Bangladesh is formulating a human-centric National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy centered on human rights, ethics, safety and inclusive development, Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam said on Saturday.

Speaking at the High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) 2026 in Shanghai, the minister said the government is modernizing the country's digital policy and legal framework to harness the benefits of artificial intelligence while ensuring responsible governance and mitigating associated risks.

He said the government is committed to building an AI ecosystem that prioritizes citizens' welfare and promotes innovation without compromising privacy, security or ethical standards.

The minister said: “The future of artificial intelligence should not be measured solely by technological advancement. It must also reflect human values, justice and inclusivity.”

He called for stronger international cooperation on AI governance.

Faqir Mahbub Anam said Bangladesh is advancing work on an integrated and inclusive National AI Policy alongside several complementary initiatives. These include strengthening personal data protection and cybersecurity, developing guidelines for the responsible use of AI in the public sector, improving data governance standards, expanding AI-focused education and curricula, and establishing decentralized AI Centers of Excellence across the country.

The minister outlined 4 priorities for global AI governance: safety, equity, adaptability and international cooperation.

He urged the international community to promote technology transfer, capacity building, data sovereignty and equitable access to AI technologies for developing countries, saying global AI governance should address the needs of emerging economies alongside advanced nations.

The high-level meeting was held under the theme “AI Partnership for a Brighter Future” and focused on the role of artificial intelligence in sustainable development, global security, inclusive economic growth and international AI governance.

The event brought together heads of government, ministers, representatives from more than 100 countries, leaders of international organizations, technology industry executives and academics to discuss AI, ethical governance and international collaboration.

The World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) 2026 is being held in Shanghai from July 17 to July 20, bringing together policymakers, researchers and industry leaders to discuss emerging trends and governance challenges in artificial intelligence.
