State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku on Monday said that Rajshahi Central Park and Zoo, once a major recreational attraction for city residents, lost much of its heritage due to mismanagement and corruption during the previous government's tenure.
“The facility would be restored and redeveloped to meet public expectations,” he said after visiting the zoo.
Tuku said the government is committed to modernising the zoo by transforming it into a safari park. A team of experts will soon assess the site's condition and submit recommendations to guide future development.
He also said the ministry would investigate the relocation of the zoo's animals and review their current condition before taking necessary steps.
Highlighting the government's development agenda, Tuku said several public welfare programs are being implemented, including the distribution of family and farmer cards, canal excavation, nationwide tree plantation, agricultural loan waivers, and honorariums for imams. He added that the government has made significant progress in serving the public within a short period.
The state minister further announced plans to establish a modern meat processing centre in Rajshahi. According to him, the Rajshahi City Corporation has identified a suitable location, and the ministry will take required steps to ensure safe meat preservation and marketing.
Tuku said Rajshahi has witnessed visible improvements in urban cleanliness, waterlogging management, and tree plantation initiatives.
Rajshahi City Corporation Administrator Md Mahfuzur Rahman Riton, Department of Livestock Services Director (Administration) Dr Md Boyzar Rahman, National Zoo Director Dr Md Shahinur Alam, and Rajshahi City Corporation Chief Executive Officer Md Rezaul Karim were present during the visit.
