Around 3,000 underprivileged people received free eye care services at a day-long medical camp in Paikgachha upazila of Khulna on Thursday, with more than 500 cataract patients selected for surgery.

The free eye camp was organised on the premises of Paikgachha Government High School by the Rotary Club of Midtown with support from BNSB Eye Hospital and the Fred Hollows Foundation.

Administrator of Khulna Zila Parishad SM Monirul Hasan Bappi attended the programme as the chief guest and said the initiative was intended to provide advanced eye care services to disadvantaged and low-income people who have limited access to quality medical treatment.

"It is not merely a healthcare service, but a service to humanity. The Rotary Club and the physicians are utilising their expertise and professional skills for the welfare of the people," he said.

Bappi said similar humanitarian initiatives would continue to expand healthcare services for people living in remote and underserved areas.

Specialist physicians from BNSB Eye Hospital examined nearly 3,000 patients during the camp.

More than 500 patients were selected for cataract surgery, while others received prescriptions, medicines and spectacles based on their medical requirements.

Rotary Club of Midtown President Rotarian Sohag Mina chaired the programme.
