Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury on Sunday said Bangladeshis are known as a nation of “fish and rice” and the country is one of the best in the world in terms of natural resources and scenic beauty.

“The government is working to advance the country through proper management of water resources and development of canals and wetlands,” he said while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of National Fisheries Week being observed under the theme “A self-reliant country through silver fish, Bangladesh first.”

Jointly organized by Department of Fisheries (DoF) and Khulna District Administration, the minister attended the discussion and award-giving ceremony as the chief guest at the conference room of Khulna Deputy Commissioner’s office.

Despite facing drought, floods, excessive rainfall and other natural adversities, Bangladesh produces a huge quantity of fruits and crops, he said.

The minister also called upon farmers, blacksmiths, potters, weavers, fishermen and people from all walks of life to work together to achieve self-sufficiency in every sector.

“Imports must be reduced by increasing domestic production. In particular, we can meet the country’s demand for fish and also earn foreign currency by exporting fish after increasing production,” he said.

Nitai Roy Chowdhury urged all to move forward united with dreams, hopes and aspirations and build a prosperous, self-reliant and developed Bangladesh through collective efforts.
