Police seized 42 kilograms of hemp and arrested two women drug traders during separate raids in Jamalpur on Saturday morning.
The arrests were made from the city’s Mridha Para area and Doyamoyee Mor following a tip-off, police said.
The accused have been identified as Khodeja Begum (40), daughter of the late Hashar Ali of Kusumhati Krishnapur Uttarpara village in Sadar upazila of neighbouring Sherpur District, and Bulbuli (58), wife of Abul from Munshi Nangla village in Melandaha Upazila of Jamalpur.
Police said a raid was conducted at a rented house in the Mridha Para area at dawn, where officers recovered 42 kg of hemp packed in three travel bags and two sacks from Khodeja Begum’s room. She was arrested on the spot.
During interrogation, Khodeja Begum allegedly admitted that the seized hemp was stored for sale.
Based on her information, police later arrested Bulbuli from Doyamoyee Mor, who allegedly admitted during preliminary questioning that she had come to the area to purchase the drugs.
At a press briefing held at Jamalpur Sadar Police Station in the afternoon, Officer-in-Charge Nazmus Sakib said Khodeja Begum is a professional drug trader and already faces a narcotics case at Sherpur Sadar Police Station.
Police added that a case has been filed under the Narcotics Control Act, and both accused will be produced before a court following legal procedures.
