The 25th International Conference of the North Indian Ocean Hydrographic Commission (NIOHC), organized under the supervision of the Bangladesh Navy, officially commenced on Monday in Chittagong.
The three-day conference was inaugurated by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral M Nazmul Hassan, who attended as the chief guest. The opening ceremony was joined by senior representatives of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), delegates from NIOHC member states, diplomats, as well as senior military and civilian officials, said a press release.
The session was chaired by Rear Admiral Mohammad Musa, Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Operations), who also serves as Chairman of the National Hydrographic Committee and the NIOHC.
In his inaugural address, the Chief of Naval Staff underscored the importance of establishing a dedicated ‘National Hydrographer’ as an independent national authority, in line with practices adopted by other maritime nations. He stated that such an institution would ensure effective coordination of hydrographic activities across Bangladesh while functioning as an accountable national body.
He further emphasized that the initiative would enhance safe navigation for commercial and other maritime vessels, strengthen maritime safety, and contribute significantly to the development of the blue economy and coastal zone management.
Throughout the conference, participating countries presented updates on their hydrographic developments, key achievements, and future plans. Discussions also focused on enhancing regional cooperation, technical collaboration, and training support among countries of the North Indian Ocean region.
Established in 2002 under the International Hydrographic Organization, the NIOHC is one of 15 regional hydrographic commissions. It covers a vast maritime area stretching from the Andaman Sea to the Gulf of Aden.
Member states attending the conference include Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. Cooperative members such as Australia, France, Oman, Mauritius, Seychelles, the United Kingdom, and the United States also took part. Observers from Russia, Malaysia, and Sudan, along with representatives from international organizations and hydrographic-related commercial entities, were also present.
Notably, Bangladesh is currently serving as the Chair of the NIOHC for the 2025–2027 term.
