Dinajpur, widely regarded as the granary of northern Bangladesh, has achieved a bumper wheat harvest this season, with production and cultivation both exceeding the official targets.

Favourable weather conditions combined with close supervision from the Department of Agricultural Extension have contributed to the bumper output. Vast stretches of golden wheat fields now dominate the district’s landscape as harvesting and threshing activities continue across all 13 upazilas.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension, wheat cultivation was initially targeted at 7,275 hectares for the current season. However, actual cultivation reached 8,087 hectares—exceeding the target by 812 hectares. This marks a notable rise from last year’s 6,571 hectares, reflecting growing farmer interest in the crop.

Farmers across the district report strong yields and satisfactory market prices. Mominul Islam of Nashipur village in Sadar upazila said he cultivated wheat on one acre of land and harvested 49 maunds. He noted that improved seeds and timely agricultural advice played a key role in boosting productivity.

In Biral upazila’s Farakkabad village, farmer Abdul Majid harvested 38 maunds from 75 decimals of land, crediting modern farming practices and official guidance for surpassing previous yield records.

Agricultural officials say farmers are increasingly adopting high-yielding varieties such as BARI-25, BARI-26, BARI-28, BARI-30, and BARI-31, which produce 16–18 maunds per bigha (33 decimals). Cultivation costs remain relatively low, ranging between Tk 6,000 and Tk 7,500 per bigha, making wheat an economically attractive crop.

Md Afzal Hossain, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension, said the success is the result of favourable weather and continuous field-level support from agricultural officers. He urged farmers to complete harvesting and threshing within the next 15 days due to the risk of storms.

Md Arifuzzaman, Deputy Director of the Dinajpur Wheat Research Institute, said ongoing efforts to reduce import dependency include providing improved seeds and technical assistance to farmers, which has contributed to the expansion of cultivation beyond targets.

Hakimpur Upazila Agriculture Officer Arzina Begum said government incentives, including fertilizers and quality seeds, are encouraging farmers to expand wheat cultivation, strengthening national food security.

Experts believe that timely harvesting ahead of adverse weather could ensure a strong economic contribution from wheat production in Dinajpur this year.
